Hang Tag specification
Who orders hang tags?
Clothing and knitwear makers, jewellers, gift shops, bakeries tying tags on boxes, jam makers tying them on jar necks and anyone wanting a price or a story on string.
Tags are not stickers
Hang tags are printed on stiff card with no adhesive. If you need a label that sticks, look at our product labels instead.

Design Your Label

Your logo sits on a real photo of our label. A designer redraws it to scale on the artwork and sends a free proof before anything is printed.
What is a hang tag for?
A hang tag carries the information you do not want printed on the product itself: the brand, the size, the price, the care instructions, the story behind the piece. On clothing it hangs from a button or a seam. On a gift it ties on with ribbon. On a jar it loops round the neck with string.
Because it hangs rather than sticks, it can be removed without leaving a mark, which suits clothing, knitwear and anything given as a present.
A hang tag is also the easiest place to change prices or details between batches. Swap the tag and the product is ready for its next market or shop, with nothing to peel or scrape off.
- Your brand name and logo
- The product name or style
- The size
- The price, printed or written by hand
- Care instructions or a link to them
- A short line about how it was made
Flat, folded or shaped?
| Format | Space for | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Flat rectangle | Logo one side, details on the back | Clothing, accessories, prices |
| Folded | Four panels: cover, story, care, price | Knitwear, gifts, brand stories |
| Round | Logo and a short line | Jars, bottles, gift bags |
| Shaped | Logo-led design | Statement tags, leaf or label shapes |
Folded tags give you room to tell a story without making the tag bigger on the hanger.
Which card should a tag be printed on?
Hang tags need stiffness so they hang straight and survive being handled on a rail. We print on thick card in white, kraft or black. White gives the brightest colour; kraft looks natural and hand-made; black looks smart with white or foil lettering.
A matt finish keeps tags easy to write on, which matters if you add prices by hand. Soft-touch adds a velvet feel. Gold or silver foil on a logo makes a simple tag look special.
Very thin card curls and flutters on a rail, while very thick card can be hard to thread on fine cord. We pick a weight that hangs well and tell you on the proof which card we have used.
Where should the hole go?
Usually 5 to 6 mm in from the top edge, centred, or in a top corner for a tag that hangs at an angle. The hole is round and about 4 to 5 mm across, which suits most string, cotton cord and thin ribbon.
Keep text and logos clear of the hole by at least 5 mm, so nothing is punched through. On folded tags, the hole goes through both layers near the fold.
Reinforced holes are not on our standard list. If your tags will be pulled hard, as on bags tied to a bike rack, tell us and we will suggest a slightly larger tag with more card around the hole.
How to order hang tags
- Choose the format: flat, folded, round or shaped.
- Tell us the size, the card colour and whether you print one or both sides.
- Say where the hole goes and whether you want string supplied loose or tags left plain.
- Send artwork for each side.
- Check the free proof, which shows both sides and the hole position, then approve it.
Each side of a tag is checked on the proof, including the position of the hole against the artwork, before anything is printed.
Can I write prices on the tags?
Yes. Leave a clear panel on the back and choose a matt finish, which takes a ballpoint or fine marker well. Gloss and soft-touch are harder to write on. Many makers print everything except the price and add that by hand, so one tag works across several products.
If prices are fixed, printing them is quicker and looks tidier on a rail of matching items.
Kraft tags with a single dark ink suit food gifts such as jam, honey and biscuits, where a natural look matches the produce.
Tags for jars, bottles and gifts
A round or small rectangular tag tied round the neck of a jar or bottle with string adds a hand-made finish to hampers and gifts. It is also a way to add a message, such as a recipe or a serving tip, without crowding the label.
For gifts, a tag with a blank to and from panel on matt card lets customers write their own message. Our brown kraft paper labels pair well with kraft tags for a matching look.
Tags tied round a bottle neck should hang below the cap without covering the main label. Measure from the cap to the top of the label and choose a tag shorter than that gap.
How much do hang tags cost?
Prices start from £0.05 a tag for simple flat tags in larger quantities. Folded tags, double-sided print, foil and shaped cuts add to the cost. The quote shows the exact figure for your tag and comes back by email within one working day with a free proof.
Large quantities of a flat tag cost far less per tag than small runs of complex shapes, so many brands use one simple tag across their range and change only the printed details.
Printing and delivery
Tags are printed and cut in 3 to 5 working days after you approve the proof, then packed in bundles so they arrive flat. Free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2 to 3 working days.
If tags arrive misprinted or damaged, let us know within 10 days with a photo and we reprint them or refund you.
Do hang tags suit market stalls?
Very well. A rail of clothing or a table of gifts with matching tags looks organised, and customers can read the price without asking. Tags also travel well: a box of a few hundred fits in a bag with your stock.
If you sell outdoors, choose a coated finish so the tags do not mark if they get damp, and keep spares in a sealed bag.
Bring a few spare blank tags with a marker too. When a customer asks for a gift message, a handwritten tag makes the sale feel personal.

What card are your hang tags printed on?
Thick card in white, kraft or black, stiff enough to hang straight on a rail.
Can hang tags be printed on both sides?
Yes. Most clothing tags carry the logo on the front and details on the back.
Do you supply string with hang tags?
Ask on your quote and we will tell you what can be supplied with your tags.
How big is the hole in a hang tag?
About 4 to 5 mm, which suits most string, cord and thin ribbon.
Can I have a folded hang tag?
Yes. A folded tag gives four panels for the brand, a story, care details and the price.
Can I write prices on hang tags?
Yes, on a matt finish. Gloss and soft-touch are harder to write on.
Do you make round hang tags?
Yes. Round tags of around 50 mm suit jars, bottles and gift bags.
Can hang tags have gold foil?
Yes. Foil on a logo is a popular finish, especially on black or kraft card.
Are hang tags the same as clothing care labels?
No. Hang tags hang on string. Sewn care labels are a different product; ask and we will tell you what we can arrange.
Can I order hang tags for a craft fair?
Yes. Short runs are a normal order, and minimums are quoted per job.
Can a hang tag be cut into a leaf shape?
Yes. Shaped tags are cut to your outline; send the shape with your artwork.
Where should text sit on a hang tag?
At least 5 mm clear of the hole and the edges, so nothing is punched or trimmed.
